Growing up as a person of color (POC) in Humboldt, there was a notable absence of natural hair care options and specialized professionals. Over time, however, this landscape has begun to change.
In my personal experience, I struggled with hair care due to my mother's limited understanding of my hair type. Mornings often involved aggressive brushing and herbal essences mousse, resulting in dry and damaged hair. Additionally, frequent use of heat styling tools further compounded the damage. Throughout middle school, my hair was often tied up in a messy bun, leading to matting and frizz due to improper care. Only occasionally did I wear my hair down in its natural state, which I perceived as unruly and frizzy.
Things took a positive turn at the end of my freshman year in high school when I began researching proper hair care techniques via online resources like YouTube. Within a year, I transformed my hair texture from frizzy to fabulous.
During high school, I honed my skills by practicing various hairstyles, initially on myself and later on family and friends. What started as a hobby evolved into a passion. After graduating during the pandemic, I enrolled in Fredrick and Charles Beauty College to formalize my training. While the curriculum lacked specialized instruction for textured hair, my classmates and I adapted, drawing from our personal experiences.
Upon completing 1000 hours of training, I graduated from beauty college. Since then, I've been operating my business from home, saving up to cover my licensing fees. This experience has been invaluable, allowing me to transition from my previous job of five years to opening my own shop.
I am excited to contribute to Humboldt County's natural hair care scene and look forward to serving the community.
